National Holiday

Today was my 21st birthday. It was definitely one of the more calm birthdays that I’ve had. My sister and brother-in-law are on a two-week cruise, my grandma is recovering from her stroke, and the friends that I would actually enjoy seeing are busy. I wish my parents had tried for better timing for my birthday. Geez.

Anyway, my birthday was much more than I had expected given the circumstances. I woke up late and hung around the house for a few hours while my mom was visiting my grandma. Here’s a list of what I accomplished:

  •  Watched almost an hour of Harold and Maude
  • Played with Pumpkin, my kitten
  • Decided to put up more Christmas lights outside and electrocuted myself in the process. No joke.

My mom eventually came home and we went out to dinner at a ritzy restaurant she used to go to when she was in college. I ordered my first drink and I was sad I didn’t get carded. I figured out later that my mom had told them that it was my birthday, so I wasn’t so disappointed. At the end of our meal, they brought me out my own personal cupcake with a candle in it. My family does that every year, but I figured that because it was just my mom and me things would be a little more low-key. Nope.

After dinner, we traveled to a part of Dallas I’d never been before to look at Christmas lights. I avoided getting electrocuted this time. My mom actually used a Mapsco to navigate us to the neighborhood she wanted to go see–I must have told her at least five times to please just tell me next time so I can use MapQuest. We got to our destination after stopping and u-turning, though, and I immediately knew why my mom had brought me. This lady had basically used lights to decorate every inch of her house–even the lawn. She had weird figurines and scary-looking Santas which I was excited to pose with. She had even wrapped an old bicycle in lights and hung it from the roof. I’ll have to post pictures in my next entry, I’m too tired right now. It was just one of those grounding experiences that makes me realize that yes, I am from Texas. People here are crazy. And sometimes I secretly miss it.

In other riveting news, we went to see my grandma and she and my mom sang me “Happy Birthday” in tandem. And as I thought they were finishing, they both chimed in with, “…And many more” at the same time without missing a beat.
